Did you know that Richardson's Ground Squirrel can scream but not out loud? When a Richard's Ground Squirrel thinks it's being hunted down, it screams but only squirrels can hear it. Richardson's Ground Squirrel use ultrasonic waves to send out alerts to let other squirrels know that there's danger coming. Many animals use ultrasonic waves to survive but this is the first animal known to warn others using it. The silent call is only used for when danger is around, if a squirrel is known for sending out fake alarms sends out a warning call, all the other squirrels would ignore it! If there would be a human near a squirrel, it would start to send out warnings because it's feeling attacked but we wouldn't be able to hear it because the frequency for a squirrel is too high for a human to hear. The approximate hearing range (Hz) for humans is 20 - 20 000 Hz and a squirrels hearing range is about 100 - 50 000 Hz. A Richardson's Ground Squirrel's diet consists of grasses, seeds, insects, and cereal crops. They are a big pest to farmers and they're crops, they can eat all the crops. They live in Plains of North America, underground in burrows with tunnels and chambers. They hibernate for most of their lives, 9 months a year. But life for a squirrel isn't so easy, they need to be cautious of their surroundings because of predators like hawks, coyotes, badgers, and farmers. The approximate hearing range (Hz) for humans is 20 - 20 000 Hz and a squirrels hearing range is about 100 - 50 000 Hz.
